“When a person has to part with what is dearest to them in this world, that is the fire designed by God for this very purpose, to reveal to them the truth about themselves. 1 Peter 4:12 says we are not to be surprised if God in His providence brings affliction into our lives. Through such trials we can glorify God (verse 16). James 1:2-4, 12; 1 Peter 1:6-9. God wants us to have assurance; His method to give us assurance is to test us in the furnace of affliction. Particularly when facing death, assurance of faith becomes very precious. God brings affliction into our lives so that we will appreciate His mercy and grace in salvation; in order that we will properly value saving faith. God uses affliction to reveal to us whether or not we possess saving faith.” –Notes by Michael Stohlmeyer on “Jonathan Edwards — Religious Affections” p. 327-328
Grateful to have been married to my wonderful husband Michael for nearly 35 years who is now with the Lord, I would like to share from writers from the past who have strengthened our faith and walk with Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer. His walk with God was deeply enriched by the writings of authors from the past and I dedicate this blog to him and to them.
